SET 2009 Conference

School of the Built Environment

On the behalf of the Word Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies, I should like to invite you to attend the SET 2009 Conference in Aachen, Germany, 31 August-2 September 2009. This is our 8th International SET Conference. Previous conferences have been held in Porto (Portugal, 2002), Chongqing (China, 2003), Nottingham (United Kingdom, 2004), Shandong (China, 2005), Vicenza (Italy, 2006), Santiago (Chile, 2007) and Korea (Seoul, 2008).

The SET conferences bring to the fore the latest development of sustainable technologies in the built environment, transport and industry.

Our current fuel economy is not sustainable and radical measures are required to reduce CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions from buildings, transport and industry need to be reduced substantially and wider application of renewable technologies is essential to achieving a sustainable urban environment. Increased prices of fossil fuels due to limited resources have affected the economy and jobs worldwide. We will need to develop new industry, invest in renewable energy technologies, education and training. Events such as SET conferences are fundamental to increasing knowledge transfer and increasing uptake of sustainable technologies.

The SET 2009 conference programme will cover a wide range of topics on sustainable technologies. We shall have excellent keynote speakers and sessions focusing on key research topics. The conference covers a range of topics including:

1. Sustainable building design such as low/zero carbon buildings

2. Renewable energy technologies including solar, PV, wind, wave power and biomass

3. Low carbon technologies including fuel cells, heat pumps and hydrogen economy

4. Sustainable technologies in industry and transport

5. Renewable energy management, economics and environmental impact

I would like to thank Professor Ingo Romey and his colleagues at the University of Duisburg-Essen for organising the conference.

I look forward to seeing you in Aachen.
