Strawsons Energy : We are based in the East Midlands, but we grow Short Rotation Coppice Willow from in several counties including Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire , Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire .
We are now the countrys single biggest grower of SRC willow with over 1 thousand acres currently planted and this figures is increasing yearly. We have our own specialist machinery to harvest, process and deliver the fuel to our customers. We harvest the willow with our modified sugar cane harvester into billets of willow 200mm long. This allows the crop to dry to 30% moisture content and below. We then use a bespoke processing machine to reduce the 200mm billets down to our recognised brands of Koolfuel 40, Koolfuel 25 and finally Koolfuel 15mm. This machine is built on a lorry trailer and can be taken to each storage site to increase the weight that of fuel that each of our two walking floor trailers can carry. We supply these Koolfuel 15 granules to EDF’s powerstation at Cottam, Koolfuel 25 to our local school boiler at Dunham on Trent and finally Koolfuel 40 to the boiler that heats our own Business Park and offices. We also supply sustainably derived wood pellets made in France and Ireland all around the UK ranging from Glasgow to the M25. These customers range in size from Carillion, Defra, the RAF down to mid scale users like schools and the RSPB right down to individual domestic houses. http://strawsonsenergy.co.uk |

The Austin Company of UK Limited , Austin undertake design and construction of specialist buildings primarily consisting of Research & Development and production facilities. In the design and construction of these buildings, it's becoming increasingly more important to understand that whilst the requirements for a facility, which is highly energy efficient and utilises renewable energy and sustainable materials, is the ultimate goal, these buildings will have very specific functions to perform. If the performance of those functions is compromised or necessary regulatory requirements cannot be met, then the building will become effectively useless. Austin's aims are to: Understand how trends in sustainable energy technologies and the expanded use of sustainable materials can be better incorporated into the design of these specialist facilities. Proactively develop and encourage the integration of sustainable energy technologies and materials, without compromising the functions these facilities provide. Austin, established in 1938, is home to a comprehensive set of consulting, design, engineering, management and construction services. Fresh Air System Ltd was formed in 2009 by Richard Rickie and his daughter Jemma Woods to capitalise on a new innovative system for home ventilation. Presently at the design stage, following successful testing we intend to see the concept into production. The system MHX, modular heat exchange, incorporates heat recovery ventilation within insulating panels, designed to be fitted between roof trusses. With this system, generous whole house ventilation and thermal insulation is provided in the buildings roof element. Designed to fulfil modern building requirements for airtightness whilst providing outstanding indoor air quality. The modular system enables discrete fresh air supply to specific rooms offering additional benefits to energy efficiency, noise transmission and conceivably, passive ventilation. It is early days for this venture but following an encouraging Ecobuild exhibition and fruitful collaboration with Professor Saffa Riffat there is commitment to progress towards production. For an in depth description of this new technology and progress updates visit our website at www.freshairsystems.co.uk

TADPOLE ENERGY was formed in September 2008 to bring together the elements need to drive the new Tadpole forward. It was discovered from initial tests that when dissolved air is removed from a heating system, not only can it not corrode the system, but the initial heat up on commissioning is faster with a 9°C higher temperature achieved literally straight out of the box. After a couple of weeks the flow through the system is improved so that radiators that previously were cooler, are now at the same temperature as the rest of the system. The pump is barely detectable in its function and, in a system boiler, the hot water is hotter, with a faster heat up and recovery time. Tests with a boiler manufacturer revealed that Tadpole saved 27% in a sealed system, which was thought to be impossible.
Further trials were conducted with a ground source heat pump, which confirmed that when installed in the ground loop, Tadpole will improve the C.o.P of that by 8% and when installed in the primary system, it improved the C.o.P by 9-15%. A report from a local authority in the North of England told us that when two Tadpoles were installed in one ground source heat pump, It reduced its electrical consumption by 29%, yet the C.o.P remained the same. It supplied heat and hot water for a single occupancy bungalow for under £150.00 for a full year. Further trials were conducted with air to water heat pumps and the increase in performance of these is such that the need to oversize radiators I a retrofit system negates the need to oversize radiators. In fact one 12kW heat pump achieved 70°C literally out of the box and ahs subsequently been turned down. Currently, modelling is being done for a larger commercial unit. www.tadpoleenergy.com/ |

SolarEmpower Ltd was formed in 2006 to manufacture and further develop the solar technology of Optical Products ltd who brought together in a unique way solar thermal and photovoltaic systems through their long established optical expertise. The multifaceted solar resource can now be cost effectively harnessed within the envelope of a building by optically splitting the sky into the region containing the sun’s path and the rest of the sky. The cool skylight is ideal for lighting the interior of a building, saving artificial lighting and cooling costs and carbon whilst the direct sunlight cogenerates heat and electricity. Additionally, innovative use of the cogenerated heat for ventilation, space heating and even cooling has the potential to change most buildings into net generators of energy. 13 years of development in collaboration with leading institutions such as Imperial College and the Fraunhofer Institute has already led to a fully accredited product that changes received wisdom, a highly versatile solar thermal vacuum tube system which can be installed on walls or flat roofs without loss of efficiency. This very efficient solar heater can also drive a low temperature desalination system developed by a successful EU project which now has led to integration with a water-from-air technology. The synergetic synthesis of these cutting edge technologies, resulting from decades of dedicated work by many leading researchers, has very far reaching implications. One rapidly deployed way of achieving our global carbon reduction targets and providing nations with energy security is to erect an array of contained environment greenhouses with our technology embedded in its double skin wall. This can cost-effectively provide electricity, food and water for communities even in arid regions. Independent validation of the viability of this approach is currently being undertaken by Nottingham University and other leading sustainability establishments.
